Frequently Asked Questions

What is coaching?

Coaching is for people who want more from their business and personal ambitions. A coach helps clients establish goals, develop a plan, and establish accountability through the process. The coach provides support and tracks progress through this process. It's not unlike having a personal trainer or an athletic coach... transformational, but with a business and personal focus. Achieving goals happens more quickly as a result of the coaching partnership.

Why does coaching work?

Coaching works when two factors are present: 1) The client is willing to grow, and 2) The client recognizes a gap between from where he/she is now and where he/she wants to be.

Successful clients know the value of sharing ideas with someone who understands them. The coach is suportive, yet remains objective to not be biased or self-serving. Talking through options with someone who listens and understands serves to gain clarity of the situation.

Coaching works because of three unique features:

Synergy: Client and coach become a team, focusing on the client's goals and needs thereby accomplishing more than the client could do independently.

Structure: With a coach, the client takes action, thinks bigger, and accomplishes the task. The client responds to the accountability system, and in turn, achieves the goals.

Expertise: The coach knows how to help people make better decisions, set the best goals, develop new skills for communicating and restructure their professional and personal lives for maximum productivity.

Where do you start with a coach?

The first stage begins with an introductory session where the client and the coach get to know each other. The coach listens to the what the client wants to achieve as well as the client's needs and issues. The client assesses how comfortable he/she is with the coach. During this meeting, both parties design a list of goals and a game plan to reach these goals.

How do the coaching sessions work?

Coaching is typically conducted over the phone. In addition to allowing frequent, regular contact, it makes it easy to stay in the "coaching relationship", since the client can call from their office, home, or on the road. The client completes a Coaching Call Strategy Form prior to each call, describing the current challenges and the progress they've made. The coaching typically occurs in four 40-minute sessions (one call each week).

The focus of the call is determined by the client. The coach helps the client solve the current problems and take advantage of opportunities. Coaches ask questions and look for connecting themes. When the client takes on a large goal, coaches help establish a structure and plans to set the client up for success. We bring out the clients best by offering advice, holding people accountable for their actions, helping them strategize and celebrating the wins. There is often "homework", where the client is given an idea, new perspective or a challenge to try something in a new way. That forms the basis for the next call.

What kind of results or changes can a client expect when working with a coach?

Clients take themselves and what they want more seriously.

Clients take more effective and focused actions immediately.

Clients create momentum to achieve more. They are able to get themselves 'unstuck' and they succeed in finding ways to gain balance.

Clients set personal goals that are clear and meets their needs.

Clients identify and eliminate the barriers that get in the way of the achieving goals.

Clients communicate about what they need and want from others in a more responsible way.

What happens if I miss a call due to an emergency?
